Tele-Operative Low-Cost Robotic Lung Ultrasound Scanning Platform for Triage of COVID-19 Patients

Novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a pandemic of epic proportions and global response to prepare health systems worldwide is utmost importance. In addition its cost-effectiveness in resources-limited setting, lung ultrasound (LUS) emerged as rapid noninvasive imaging tool for the diagnosis COVID-19 infected patients. Concerns surrounding LUS include disparity patients healthcare providers, relatively small number physicians sonographers capable performing LUS, most importantly, requirement substantial physical contact between patient operator, increasing risk transmission. Mitigation spread virus paramount A 2-dimensional (2D) tele-operative robotic platform may be significant benefit. The authors address aforementioned issues use application COVID- 19 addition, first time application, feasibility safety were validated three healthy subjects, along with 2D image optimization comparison overall accuracy. Preliminary results demonstrate that proposed allows successful acquisition humans.
